Sheetmetal Workers of WV Program Summary

Our Commitment to producing the highest quality Sheet Metal Worker possible starts before an applicant touches a pair of snips, or holds his/her first tinning hammer. It starts with the application, where the individual receives a sample test to help prepare them for the real thing. It continues through the testing stage, which is administered by an independent third party to insure impartiality and fairness.

After receiving the results, applicants are notified by certified mail of their score. Those who received a score of 70% or better are then scheduled an interview. Panels consisting of representatives of both labor and management or Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee (JATC) for short question the applicants on their future and how it incorporates into Sheet Metal Industry. These scores are added to the test score and are placed in order, highest to lowest.

These top qualified applicants are now ready to begin their 5-year apprenticeship. They will join the other current apprentices in the program who receive 200 hours of training a year related to this field.

Textbooks are supplied by the International Training Institute (ITI) to ensure that the information is not only current, but all apprentices across the country are taught the same up to date material. The instructors for the Sheet Metal Apprenticeship come from the rank and file membership to insure exceptional understanding of the material being taught. They are then sent to instructors training to better educate them on imparting this knowledge.

The curriculums? Only the latest advancements in the fields of architectural sheet metal, welding including SMAW, GMAW, and GTAW (mig, tig, or stick) residential or commercial services classes, CAD (Computer aided drafting). This is where our apprentices learn all aspects of drafting and blueprint reading, layout, fabrication and installation of sheet metal. Taking a flat sheet, laying out a pattern, trimming, forming and finally putting together the final product.

click here to print the WV Carpenter JATC Program Summary

An apprenticeship is a method of learning that allows the apprentice to learn while they work. Our apprentices receive the very best training we can provide in one of our training centers and also receive training on the job while earning a decent wage.

The WV Carpenter Apprenticeship program is a four year program that teaches the apprentices a “dirt to doorknobs” approach to their trade. We train in everything from site layout, concrete forms, framing, scaffolding, blueprints, welding, interior systems, finish work, and much more. Everything you would need to know to be a productive carpenter.

What is great about an apprenticeship program is that it doesn’t cost you anything. As long as you are selected to enter the program you receive training that is paid for by our membership. We don’t even use tax payer money to fund our program. Our Apprenticeship program has graduated scores of workers. We’re governed by the US Dept. of Labor/Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training so this is no joke…this program is the real deal.

When you apply for the apprenticeship you will take our standard entrance exam which is a basic math test. Study up on fractions and decimals! If you successfully pass the entrance test then you will be contacted for an interview. This interview is a standardized interview given to each applicant. You will be scored on your interview and that score will be added to your test score. We select apprentices according to their score, not who they know. Gone are the days when you had to know someone to gain acceptance. Look below for the application dates and your nearest application location. If you need help, contact our Training Center offices.

Boilermakers 667 has a three year apprenticeship program that teaches skills in a variety of welding areas. Their program is located in Winfield and covers most but not all of the state.

The programs are regionally based, for more information contact their national office.

Boilermaker work demands a high degree of technical skill and knowledge, a dedication to excellence, a willingness to study and complete on-the-job-training, and an ability to travel from job site to job site to maintain employment. The following information will explain the job responsibilities, requirements, challenges, and experiences of a boilermaker.

Boilermaker Apprentice Job Duties:

Typical tasks performed by a field construction boilermaker apprentice include:

Loading and unloading materials.

Rigging materials for movement.

Directing crane operators.

Assembling/disassembling scaffolds and work platforms.

Changing crane booms.

Inspecting and caring for rigging accessories and equipment.

Burning and gouging.

Removing and replacing pressured and non-pressure components.

Interpreting blueprints.

Laying out components, and much more…

Consider These Facts Carefully:

Work performed by boilermakers requires high technical skill and dedication to top performance.

Field construction work is by nature an outside job which means exposure to all types of weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.

Boilers, dams, power generation plants, storage tanks, and pressure vessels are usually of mammoth size; therefore, a major portion of boilermaker work is performed at great heights, often from 200 to 1000 feet above the ground.

Field construction and repair work is contract work; so, when the contract is completed, the job is ended. You may have to travel the territory of the local lodge and live away from home for long periods of time.

The size of the materials, tools, and equipment handled by boilermakers requires excellent physical strength and stamina.

To become a journeyman boilermaker you must complete a minimum 6000-hour apprenticeship program of on-the-job training, usually taking four years.

To become a journeyman boilermaker, one must complete forty-eight (48) self-study lessons, on-the-job training modules, and classroom instructions (minimum of 144 hours a year).

Local 132’s training facility is conveniently located north of Charleston off Interstate 77 at the Medina Exit #154. With 165 acres of mountainous terrain it is ideally suited for training. Four full-time instructors and one part-time instructor guide both apprentices and journeymen through training on various pieces of equipment.

The administration building contains the offices and a shop for equipment repairs on the first floor and a dormitory, kitchen, and classrooms upstairs. Meals are also provided during scheduled classes to keep the members expenses as low as possible.

Maintaining almost three miles of roads connecting the training areas, provides ideal training on the motor graders.

A 165-ton Grove crane, one of only six manufactured, is used during crane training classes and in CCO (Certified Crane Operator) practical exams and WV Crane Certification. We also use seven hydraulic cranes ranging from 7 V2 ton to 165 ton and four lattice boom cranes ranging from 12 V2 ton to 65 ton for crane training.

Local 132 was the first location in the country to host an N.C.C.C.O. (National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators) practical exam. West Virginia is one of the first states to require CCO certification in their crane certification law.

Members taking the International Pipeline class have to be accomplished equipment operators prior to enrolling in the training because of the difficulty of tasks involved and the short duration of the classes.

Our classroom training includes grades and plans, load chart comprehension, Hazmat, First-Aid, C.P.R. and 10-hour OSHA Construction Safety.
